SBI is the largest public sector bank in India and is most sought competition in banking sector.


Update the SBI PO Syllabus 2016 for pre. and mains exam along with the section wise expected questions to easily crack the exam. These both exams are online based tests.
The SBI has changed the Exam Pattern for Probationary Officer Exam from last year. Now as per the new Exam pattern, the Selection Process of the Exam consists of 3 phases which are given below:

(i) Phase I: Online Preliminary Examination ( Objective type)
(ii) Phase II: Main Exam (Objective + Descriptive)
(iii) Phase III: Group Discussion & Interview (Verbal)


Phase I Prelim Exam is a qualifying examination, which makes a candidate eligible for Phase II. Through this, candidates are shortlisted for appearing in the Phase II Main Exam.
Thus, the marks secured in the Phase I Prelim Exam will not be counted for the purpose of Final Selection.
The Exam Pattern for Phase I is as follows:
The SBI Prelim Exam is an Online Objective Test of 100 marks and 1 hour time duration. The Prelims Exam consists of three sections as given below:    

Note: (i) The cutoffs are applied in 2 stages i.e. Sectional Cutoff and Overall Cutoff.
          (ii) For each wrong answer, 1/4 of the mark will be deducted as penalty.

Syllabus of Prelim Exam

English Language: The questions in this section will be from following topics:

  • Reading Comprehension
  • Cloze Test 
  • Para Jumbles Sentence 
  • Correction/ Sentence Improvement/Fill in the Blanks
  • Spotting Error 

Quantitative Aptitude: The questions in this section are asked from following topics:

  • Data Interpretation - Line Graph, Bar Graph, Pie Chart, Mixed Chart, Caselet Types
  • Quadratic Equation 
  • Simplification
  • Approximation 
  • Number Series
  • Miscellaneous 

Here Miscellaneous topic includes Simple & Compound Interest, Profit & Loss, Average, Age, Ratio and Proportion, Time and Work, Percentages, Mixture & Allegation, Partnership, Boats & Stream, Permutations & Combination, Speed time & Distance. 
Note: In SBI PO 2015 Prelims, Approximation was not asked.
Reasoning Ability: The questions in this section are asked from following topics:

  • Puzzle - Floor Based
  • Seating Arrangement - Linear/ Circular
  • Syllogism
  • Inequality
  • Input Output
  • Coding - Decoding
  • Miscellaneous The Miscellaneous topic includes Blood relation, Distance & Direction Test, Ranking / Arrangement, Alphanumeric Series.

Note: In SBI PO 2015 Prelims, Input Output was not asked.

Phase II: Main Examination

The Main Examination consists of 2 parts i.e. Objective Test and Descriptive Test. And both parts will be conducted online.

Part - I: Objective Test The Online Objective Test consists of 4 sections worth 200 marks and is of 2 hours duration. The marks are distributed as following:

General Awareness, Marketing & Computer:

The General Awareness part here includes questions from

Banking Awareness -Types of Account, Modes of Payment, Different types of Banks, Money Market, Capital Market, Banking History, RBI & History of RBI, Basel Norms.
Current Affairs - RBI in news, International, National, Summits, Awards & Honours, Sports, Science & Technology, Defence, Appointments, Obituary, Schemes.
Static GK - Rivers, Dams, Festivals, Organization - Headquarter, Country -- Capital - Currency, Sports Terms, Award - Fields.
Economy Related Questions - GDP, National Income, Budget, FDI, GST.

While Marketing has questions from various topics such as.

  • Basics of Marketing
  • Marketing Strategies
  • Marketing Management
  • Marketing Mix
  • Developing Stage of Organization
  • Promotion - Brand Value, Advertising
  • Product Life Cycle
  • Market Segmentation - Target Group.

The Computer part includes questions on various topics such as:


  • Networking
  • Input output devices
  • DBMS
  • MS Office - Word & Excel
  • Internet
  • History of computer & generations
  • Shortcuts

Data Analysis & Interpretation: This section has questions mainly from Data Interpretation. The various questions include:


  • Data Interpretation - Line Graph, Bar Graph, Pie Chart, Tabulation, Mixed Graph, Caselet
  • Data Sufficiency
  • Permutations & Combination
  • Probability
  • Number Series
  • Quadratic Equation

Note: Miscellaneous Questions are not asked in the Data Analysis & Interpretation.

Reasoning Ability: The Reasoning Questions asked in the Main Examination are of Advanced level i.e. Statement based questions are asked in large number. Thus the questions asked are from following topics

  • Syllogism
  • Input Output
  • Puzzles
  • Seating Arrangement - Linear/ Circular
  • Statement Based Questions - Arguments, Course of Action, Inference,
  • Assumptions, Reasons, Cause & Effect
  • Inequality
  • Data Sufficiency
  • Logical Reasoning 

Note: The questions asked in Main Examination are tricky in comparison to Prelim Examination.

Part -II Descriptive 

Test Descriptive test: The descriptive test is a test of English Language and is of 1 hour duration, consisting of 2 questions worth 50 marks. The Descriptive test is conducted online and Candidate has to answer Descriptive test by typing on the computer.

The marks are distributed as follows: 

(i) Essay Writing - carries 30 Marks

(ii) Letter Writing - carries 20 Marks 

The topic for Essay writing is mainly based on the current Socio - Economic issue, Economic Issue. And for Letter Writing topic can be Business letter, Personal Letter, Complaint Letter etc.

Mostly there are 3choices given and one has to select any one among the available choices.

Note: The candidates are required to qualify separately in both the parts i.e. Objective and Descriptive.

Descriptive Test Paper of only those candidates will be evaluated who score qualifying marks in the Objective Test and are placed adequately high as per total marks in objective test.

Phase III: Group Discussion and Personal Interview (GDPI) 

The candidates who managed to qualify a minimum cutoff (out of 250) as decided by the bank, will be called for Group Discussion and Interview. The maximum marks allocated to Group Discussion and Interview is 20 and 30 respectively.

Final Selection

For the final selection, Marks obtained in Main Examination (Phase II) and GDPI (Phase III) will be considered for preparation of Merit List. In order to prepare Merit, the marks obtained in Phase II (out of 250) and Phase III will be converted into 75 and 25 respectively.

And the Final selection will be made from the top merit ranked Candidates in each Category.


(i) The candidates will have to qualify both in Phase-II and Phase-III separately.

(ii) The marks of Preliminary Exam (Phase I) are not considered for preparation of Merit List.
